Effects of Spectral Dispersion of Cloud Droplet Size Distributions on Radiative Properties of Clouds and Dispersion Forcing

چکیده
where L is the liquid water content, and ρw is the density of water. In effect, these studies implicitly assume the only effect of aerosols on cloud microphysical properties is to increase N, and re can be parameterized by Eq. (1) for monodisperse droplet size distributions. Eq. (1) has also been used in the parameterization of re. However, available data suggests the spectral shape of the cloud droplet size distribution may also be influenced by the addition of anthropogenic aerosols, and our recent studies, together with others, have shown changes in d have a significant effect on calculation of re (Pontikis and Hicks 1992; Martin et al. 1994; Liu and Hallett 1997; Liu and Daum 2000). This paper expands on these previous studies to address the effect of d on cloud radiative properties, and the role anthropogenic aerosols may have in determining d of marine clouds.

Dispersion of Cloud Droplet Size Distributions, Cloud Parameterizations and Indirect Aerosol Effects
Most studies of the effect of aerosols on cloud radiative properties have considered only changes in the cloud droplet concentration, neglecting changes in the spectral shape of the cloud droplet size distribution. However, it has been shown that that the spectral dispersion of the cloud droplet size distribution (defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean radius of the droplet ...
متن کاملDispersion bias, dispersion effect, and the aerosol--cloud conundrum
This work examines the influences of relative dispersion (the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean radius of the cloud droplet size distribution) on cloud albedo and cloud radiative forcing, derives an analytical formulation that accounts explicitly for the contribution from droplet concentration and relative dispersion, and presents a new approach to parameterize relative dispersion in ...
متن کاملParameterization of Cloud Droplet Effective Radius: Effects of Spectral Dispersion and Skewness of Cloud Droplet Size Distributions
Effective radius re (defined as the ratio of the third to the second moment of a droplet size distribution) is one of the crucial variables that determine the radiative properties of liquid water clouds (Hansen and Travis 1974). The inclusion and parameterization of re in climate models has proven to be critical for assessing global climate change (Slingo 1990; Dandin et al. 1997). There has be...

Aerosol-induced increase of relative dispersion of cloud droplet size distribution ε exerts a warming effect and partly offsets the cooling of aerosol indirect radiative forcing (AIF) associated with increased droplet concentration by increasing the cloud droplet effective radius (Re) and enhancing the cloud-to-rain autoconversion rate (Au) (labeled as dispersion effect), which can help reconci...
